The Dengue Virus IgM test is a blood test that detects Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies produced by the body in response to a recent dengue virus infection. IgM antibodies usually appear within 3–5 days of the onset of symptoms and are most prominent during the first week of illness. A positive IgM result typically indicates a current or recent dengue infection.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

    This test is ordered to:
    • Diagnose a current or recent dengue infection, especially in the early stages.
    • Help distinguish between primary (first-time) and secondary dengue infections when used alongside other tests (like the IgG test or NS1 antigen test).
    • Assist in early detection and timely treatment, reducing the risk of complications.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is required.
    • Make sure to inform your healthcare provider of any current medications, recent vaccinations, or existing health conditions.
    • A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually from your arm.
