The Del 13q test is a genetic test used to detect the deletion of genetic material on the long arm (q) of chromosome 13, specifically at band 13q14. This test is commonly performed using FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) or karyotyping on blood or bone marrow samples. A deletion in this region is associated with several hematologic malignancies, especially chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

The Del 13q test is used to:
    • Diagnose or confirm certain blood cancers, particularly CLL and multiple myeloma.
    • Stratify risk and guide treatment decisions—patients with a 13q deletion as the sole abnormality in CLL often have a better prognosis than those with other chromosomal changes.
    • Monitor disease progression or response to therapy in individuals already diagnosed with a hematological disorder.
    • Evaluate bone marrow function in the context of unexplained cytopenias or abnormal blood counts.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is needed for this test.
    • A blood sample or bone marrow sample is required, depending on the clinical situation.
    • Inform your doctor of any current medications or ongoing treatments, especially chemotherapy.
