Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is performed to:
• Enhance the diagnostic accuracy of cytology samples (e.g., pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, or FNA from a mass).
• Allow for better cell preservation and tissue architecture visualization.
• Enable further testing, such as IHC, molecular studies, or special staining, for definitive diagnosis.
• Aid in the diagnosis of malignancies, infections, or inflammatory conditions.
• Complement findings from routine cytological smears.
Preparation:
• No specific patient preparation is required.
• The sample is typically collected by:
o Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) or
o Collection of body fluids (e.g., pleural, peritoneal, or cerebrospinal fluid).
• Ensure the sample is handled and transported properly to the lab to avoid degradation.
