The Cul.Sens. – Urine test is a Urine Culture and Sensitivity test used to detect and identify bacteria or other microorganisms causing a urinary tract infection (UTI). After culturing the urine, a sensitivity (antibiotic susceptibility) test is performed to determine which antibiotics will effectively treat the infection.
The culture involves placing a small amount of urine on a special medium and allowing it to grow in a lab setting, while the sensitivity test identifies the most appropriate antibiotics for treatment.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

This test is commonly ordered if a person shows signs or symptoms of a UTI, such as:
    • Burning sensation during urination
    • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
    • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
    • Lower abdominal pain or discomfort
    • Fever or chills (in more severe cases)
    • For monitoring recurrent UTIs or checking for infection during pregnancy
    It helps in:
    • Identifying the exact microorganism causing the infection
    • Choosing the most effective antibiotic to treat it
    • Preventing antibiotic resistance through targeted treatment

    Preparation:

    For patients:
    • Use a midstream clean-catch urine sample: Begin urinating, then collect the sample mid-flow into the sterile container provided.
    • Wash the genital area with water (no soap) before collecting the sample to avoid contamination.
    • Avoid urinating for at least 1 to 2 hours before the test, if possible.
    • Inform your doctor if you’re taking antibiotics or have recently completed a course, as it can affect test results.
    • For infants or toddlers, special urine collection bags may be used.
