A CT Chest Angiography (CTA) is a specialized Computed Tomography (CT) scan that focuses on the blood vessels (arteries and veins) in the chest using a contrast dye. This scan is primarily used to detect conditions such as:

  • Pulmonary embolism (PE) – Blood clots in the lungs
  • Aortic aneurysm or dissection – Abnormal bulging or tearing of the aorta
  • Coronary artery disease (CAD) – Blockages or narrowing of heart arteries
  • Vascular abnormalities – Malformations, stenosis (narrowing), or other vessel-related conditions

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    • Fasting: Fast for 4–6 hours before the test (to ensure clear imaging and avoid complications with contrast dye).
    • Hydration: Drink plenty of water before the scan (unless instructed otherwise).
    • Clothing & Accessories: Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid metal objects (zippers, jewelry, piercings, underwire bras).
    • Medical History: Inform your doctor if you:
      • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
      • Have kidney disease (a kidney function test may be required)
      • Have diabetes (especially if taking metformin)
      • Have a history of allergies to contrast dye, iodine, or seafood
    • Allergy Precautions: If you have a known allergy to contrast dye, your doctor may prescribe antihistamines or steroids before the scan.
    • Breathing Instructions: You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds during the scan to get clearer images of the blood vessels.
    • Heart Rate Management (if needed): If the test is being done to evaluate coronary arteries, beta-blockers may be given to slow the heart rate for clearer images
