A CT Angiography (CTA) of the Head & Neck with Contrast is a specialized CT scan that uses contrast dye to visualize the blood vessels in the brain, neck, and carotid arteries. It helps diagnose conditions like:

• Aneurysms (bulging blood vessels)
• Stenosis (narrowing of arteries due to plaque buildup)
• Blood clots or embolisms
• Vascular malformations (abnormal blood vessel formations)
• Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
• Tumors affecting blood supply

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline

    • Fasting Requirements
Avoid food for 4-6 hours before the test (varies by facility).
Clear liquids (water, black coffee, or tea without milk) may be allowed.
    • Hydration
Drink plenty of water before the scan, unless instructed otherwise.
Good hydration helps flush out contrast dye after the test.
    • Medication Adjustments
Diabetic patients (especially those taking metformin) may need to pause medication for 48 hours post-scan to prevent kidney issues.
Blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin, etc.) may need adjustment—confirm with your doctor.
Allergies to iodine or contrast dye? You may need pre-medication (antihistamines or steroids).
    • Contrast Injection
An IV line will be placed in your arm for the contrast injection.
You may feel a warm, flushing sensation or a metallic taste in your mouth for a few seconds.
    • During the Scan
The scan takes about 10-20 minutes.
You’ll lie still on a table, and the machine will take detailed images while the contrast circulates.
You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds.
    • Post-Test Care
Drink plenty of water to help flush the contrast out of your system.
Resume normal activities immediately unless instructed otherwise.
If you experience allergic reactions (itching, rash, difficulty breathing), contact your doctor immediately.
