The Cryptococcus Stain – India Ink Test is a microscopic examination used to detect the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans, a type of fungus, in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or other body fluids. India Ink is a black staining dye that provides contrast, allowing the capsule of the Cryptococcus organism to be seen as a clear halo against the dark background under the microscope.
This is a rapid and cost-effective screening test used mainly for diagnosing cryptococcal meningitis, especially in immunocompromised patients.
