Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is primarily performed when a fungal infection of the central nervous system (CNS) is suspected, especially:
• In patients with HIV/AIDS or other immune deficiencies
• In individuals showing signs of meningitis, such as:
o Severe headache
o Fever
o Stiff neck
o Nausea or vomiting
o Confusion or altered mental state
Purpose of the test:
• Quickly detect Cryptococcus neoformans in CSF or other sterile body fluids
• Aid in the early diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis
• Initiate prompt antifungal treatment
• Complement other tests like CSF culture or cryptococcal antigen test
Preparation:
• The test usally requires a CSF sample obtained via lumbar puncture (spinal tap).
• Fasting is generally not required, but follow your doctor’s instructions.
• Inform your doctor of any current medications, particularly blood thinners.
• You may be asked to lie flat after the lumbar puncture to prevent headaches.
• No special preparation is required if another fluid (e.g., pleural or peritoneal) is being tested.
