Why It’s Done:
This test is often used to:
• Evaluate adrenal gland function
• Help diagnose conditions such as:
o Cushing’s syndrome (high cortisol levels)
o Addison’s disease (low cortisol levels)
o Adrenal insufficiency or pituitary disorders
• Monitor the effectiveness of treatment for adrenal or pituitary disorders
• Investigate symptoms such as:
o Fatigue or weakness
o Unexplained weight changes
o High or low blood pressure
o Mood changes or depression
Preparation:
• No special fasting is required for this test.
• The sample should be collected in the late afternoon or early evening as instructed by your doctor.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements, especially:
o Corticosteroids
o Hormonal treatments
o Anti-seizure or psychiatric medications
• Avoid physical or emotional stress before the test, as stress can raise cortisol levels.
• The blood sample is typically drawn from a vein in your arm.
