Why It’s Done:
The Cobalt Blood Test is performed to:
• Monitor individuals with metal-on-metal hip implants for potential metal ion release into the bloodstream.
• Detect cobalt toxicity in individuals with symptoms such as:
o Hearing or vision problems
o Thyroid dysfunction
o Heart issues
o Nerve or cognitive problems
• Evaluate occupational exposure in workers in industries like mining, metallurgy, or battery manufacturing
• Investigate suspected overuse of cobalt-containing supplements or medications
Preparation:
• No special preparation such as fasting is required for this test.
• A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider if:
o You have metal implants
o You are exposed to cobalt at your workplace
o You take vitamin B12 supplements or multivitamins
