The Cobalt – 24 Hours Urine Test measures the amount of cobalt excreted in the urine over a 24-hour period. Cobalt is a naturally occurring element that plays a role in the body as part of vitamin B12, but exposure to high levels can be toxic. This test is typically used to assess cobalt exposure, especially in individuals with metal implants or occupational risk.
In this test, all urine passed in a 24-hour period is collected and analyzed to determine the level of cobalt, providing a more accurate measure than a single urine sample

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

This test is commonly ordered to:
    • Monitor cobalt exposure in individuals with metal-on-metal hip implants or those working in industries involving cobalt (e.g., mining, metalwork).
    • Investigate symptoms of cobalt toxicity, such as:
    o Hearing or vision problems
o Neurological symptoms (e.g., weakness, numbness, tremors)
    o Heart problems (e.g., cardiomyopathy)
    o Thyroid dysfunction
    • Evaluate environmental or occupational exposure.
    • Rule out heavy metal poisoning in patients with non-specific symptoms.

    Preparation:

    • No fasting is required, but follow all instructions from your healthcare provider.
    • Avoid vitamin or mineral supplements (especially those containing B12 or cobalt) for at least 24 hours before and during the test, unless advised otherwise.
    • You will be provided with a special collection container to collect all urine over a 24-hour period.
o Start by discarding the first morning urine.
o Collect all urine for the next 24 hours, including the first urine the following morning.
o Keep the container refrigerated or on ice during the collection.
