The CMV Viral Load Test is a molecular diagnostic test that measures the amount of CMV DNA (genetic material) in a person’s blood or body fluid using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology.
This test helps determine the level of active CMV infection (viral load), which is especially important in immunocompromised patients, such as:
• Organ or bone marrow transplant recipients
• People with HIV/AIDS
• Patients undergoing chemotherapy
The test provides results in copies/mL or IU/mL, indicating how actively the virus is replicating.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

The CMV Viral Load Test is used to:
    • Detect and quantify active CMV infection
    • Monitor the effectiveness of antiviral treatment
    • Track CMV reactivation in immunocompromised patients
    • Guide treatment decisions, including when to start, adjust, or stop antiviral medications
    • Assess the risk of CMV disease in transplant recipients or other at-risk groups
It is not typically used to diagnose past infections or determine immunity — for that, CMV IgG and IgM antibody tests are used.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation or fasting is required for this test.
    • A blood sample will be drawn from a vein in your arm.
    • Inform your healthcare provider if:
o You’re currently taking any antiviral medications
o You’ve had recent infections, vaccinations, or transfusions
o You’re undergoing transplant evaluation or monitoring
