Description
Why It’s Done:
The CMV DNA Qualitative Test is performed to:
• Confirm an active CMV infection, especially in immunocompromised individuals, including organ transplant recipients, HIV-positive individuals, and those undergoing chemotherapy.
• Diagnose CMV-related diseases in high-risk patients, such as fever, fatigue, or organ dysfunction, when symptoms are suggestive of CMV.
• Confirm CMV reactivation in individuals who have been previously infected with CMV and are now showing symptoms.
• Monitor newborns or pregnant women at risk for congenital CMV infection, as it can cause serious health problems for the baby if transmitted in utero.
The test provides a definitive yes or no result for CMV infection and is particularly useful in clinical settings where identifying the presence of the virus is critical for diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is required for the CMV DNA Qualitative Test.
• A blood sample (or other bodily fluid, depending on the suspected site of infection) will be collected.
• It is important to inform your healthcare provider if:
o You are taking antiviral medications, as they may affect the result.
o You have recently had a transfusion, organ transplant, or CMV infection, as these can influence the likelihood of detection
