Description
Why It’s Done:
The CMV IgG Avidity Test is commonly used to:
• Determine whether a CMV infection is recent or past, especially when CMV IgM antibodies are also present.
• Assess risk to the fetus during pregnancy—recent CMV infections in early pregnancy can lead to congenital CMV, a serious condition for the unborn baby.
• Help guide management in organ transplant recipients, immunocompromised individuals, or patients with HIV/AIDS.
• Clarify ambiguous results from routine CMV IgG and IgM tests.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is required for this test.
• A standard blood sample is drawn, usually from a vein in your arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or immune-modulating treatments you are taking, though they typically do not affect the test outcome.
