The CMV IgM Antibodies Test is a blood test that detects immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies produced by the body in response to a recent or current infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV).
CMV is a common herpesvirus that can infect people of all ages. While it often causes mild or no symptoms in healthy individuals, it can be serious for:
• Pregnant women (due to risk of congenital CMV)
• Newborns
• Immunocompromised individuals (e.g., transplant recipients, HIV-positive individuals)
The presence of IgM antibodies typically indicates a new or reactivated CMV infection.

Description

Why It’s Done:

This test is done to:
• Diagnose a recent or active CMV infection
• Evaluate symptoms like prolonged fever, fatigue, swollen glands, or hepatitis-like signs when CMV is suspected
• Screen pregnant women for CMV to assess the risk of transmitting the virus to the unborn baby
• Monitor transplant patients or immunocompromised individuals for CMV reactivation
• Help distinguish between primary CMV infection and past exposure (IgG testing is usually performed alongside for this purpose)

Preparation:

• No special preparation is needed for this test.
• A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any recent infections or vaccinations
o Any medications or supplements you’re taking
