Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is done to:
• Diagnose a recent or active CMV infection
• Evaluate symptoms like prolonged fever, fatigue, swollen glands, or hepatitis-like signs when CMV is suspected
• Screen pregnant women for CMV to assess the risk of transmitting the virus to the unborn baby
• Monitor transplant patients or immunocompromised individuals for CMV reactivation
• Help distinguish between primary CMV infection and past exposure (IgG testing is usually performed alongside for this purpose)
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed for this test.
• A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any recent infections or vaccinations
o Any medications or supplements you’re taking
