The Chikungunya IgM Antibodies – CSF Test is a diagnostic test used to detect IgM antibodies against the Chikungunya virus in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). IgM antibodies are produced by the immune system shortly after infection and their presence in the CSF may indicate a recent or active central nervous system (CNS) infection caused by the Chikungunya virus.
This test is typically performed using a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to collect CSF.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

    This test is done to:
    • Diagnose Chikungunya virus infection involving the central nervous system, especially in patients with neurological symptoms such as meningitis, encephalitis, seizures, or altered mental status.
    • Differentiate Chikungunya infection from other viral CNS infections such as dengue, Zika, or Japanese encephalitis.
    • Aid in early detection and appropriate management of neuro-Chikungunya, especially in endemic regions or outbreak settings.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation like fasting is required, but the procedure for collecting CSF (lumbar puncture) requires:
o Informing the doctor about any medications, especially blood thinners.
o Reporting any bleeding disorders or allergies.
    • You may be asked to lie still during and after the lumbar puncture to reduce the risk of headaches or other complications
