Why It’s Done
This test is typically ordered to:
• Evaluate immune system function, especially in individuals with suspected immunodeficiency.
• Monitor immune reconstitution after bone marrow or stem cell transplantation.
• Assess NK cell activity in autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, or certain cancers.
• Help diagnose immune-related disorders such as:
o Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME)
o HIV/AIDS
o Leukemia or lymphoma
• Investigate recurrent infections or unexplained inflammation.
Preparation
• Fasting: Not required.
• Medication: Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, as some can affect immune cell levels.
• Timing: The test can be performed at any time of day.
• Hydration: Drink water to stay hydrated, as it can make the blood draw easier
