Why It’s Done
The BUN test is ordered to:
1. Evaluate Kidney Function
• To check if the kidneys are properly filtering waste.
• To help diagnose kidney disease or monitor its progression.
2. Diagnose Other Conditions
• Conditions affecting kidney function, such as dehydration, heart failure, or urinary tract obstruction.
• To assess the severity of illness in critically ill patients.
3. Monitor Treatment
• To monitor the effectiveness of treatments for kidney disease or other related conditions.
Preparation
1. Fasting
• Usually, no fasting is required, but follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.
2. Medications
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking, as some may affect BUN levels.
3. Sample Collection
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein, typically in your arm.
• The procedure is quick and minimally invasive.
