This procedure is performed to:
1. Diagnose Blood Disorders
• Such as anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other marrow diseases.
2. Evaluate Marrow Function
• To assess marrow cellularity and health in cases of unexplained blood count abnormalities.
3. Detect Infections or Infiltrations
• Identify infections, metastatic cancers, or fibrosis affecting bone marrow.
4. Monitor Treatment Response
• To check effectiveness of treatments for blood cancers or marrow-related disorders.
Preparation
1. Medical Evaluation
• Inform your doctor about your medical history, medications (especially blood thinners), allergies, and any bleeding disorders.
2. Fasting
• Usually, no fasting is required, but follow specific instructions from your healthcare provider.
3. Medications
• You may need to stop blood-thinning medications before the procedure; consult your doctor.
4. Day of Procedure
• Wear comfortable clothing and arrange transportation if sedation is planned.
