Why It’s Done
The test is performed to:
1. Diagnose Blood Disorders
• Such as anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes, and infections affecting the marrow.
2. Evaluate Unexplained Blood Count Abnormalities
• To investigate causes of low or high blood cell counts.
3. Monitor Treatment
• To assess response to therapies like chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant.
4. Detect Marrow Infiltration or Infection
• To identify infiltration by cancer, fibrosis, or infections.
Preparation
1. Medical History
• Inform your doctor about medications, allergies, bleeding disorders, or blood thinners.
2. Fasting
• Usually no fasting is required, but follow your doctor’s instructions.
3. Medications
• You may be advised to stop blood thinners or other medications before the procedure.
4. Procedure Day
• Wear comfortable clothes and arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation is used.
