Why It’s Done:
This test is performed to:
• Diagnose avian influenza infection in people showing symptoms like:
o Fever
o Cough
o Sore throat
o Difficulty breathing
o Body aches
• Confirm infection in people with recent exposure to infected birds or poultry, especially during an outbreak
• Monitor and control the spread of the virus during regional or global public health concerns
• Differentiate bird flu from other respiratory infections, such as seasonal influenza or COVID-19
Early diagnosis is critical to start antiviral treatment and prevent complications or transmission.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed.
• Inform your doctor if you:
o Have recently traveled to areas with bird flu outbreaks
o Had contact with birds, poultry, or infected individuals
• Avoid using nasal sprays or decongestants before the sample is collected, as they may interfere with the test.
