Description
Why It’s Done:
The test is ordered when there is clinical suspicion of invasive aspergillosis or a fungal lung infection, particularly in individuals at high risk, such as:
• Patients with weakened immune systems
o Cancer or chemotherapy patients
o Organ or bone marrow transplant recipients
o Individuals with prolonged neutropenia
• Patients with chronic lung diseases
• Individuals with non-resolving pneumonia or fungal sinus infections
The test helps:
• Detect early infection with A. fumigatus
• Differentiate fungal from bacterial or viral infections
• Guide timely antifungal treatment
• Monitor disease progression or treatment response
Preparation:
• No special preparation is required for this test.
• The sample type depends on clinical presentation (e.g., blood, BAL fluid, sputum).
• If undergoing a procedure like bronchoscopy for BAL fluid collection:
o Fasting for a few hours may be required.
o Inform the doctor about any allergies, medications, or breathing issues.
