Description
Why It’s Done:
Doctors order this test when they suspect an Aspergillus-related condition, especially if the patient has:
• Chronic cough, breathlessness, or hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
• Asthma or cystic fibrosis with worsening respiratory symptoms
• Immunosuppression due to chemotherapy, organ transplantation, or HIV/AIDS
• Persistent lung infiltrates or nodules seen on imaging
• Symptoms of allergic reactions in the lungs
The test is useful in diagnosing conditions such as:
• Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CPA)
• Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA)
• Invasive Aspergillosis (IA)
• Aspergilloma (fungus ball)
Preparation:
• No special preparation is required.
• A blood sample is collected via venipuncture.
• Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any current symptoms (fever, cough, weight loss, etc.)
o Existing lung or immune system conditions
o Any medications being taken, especially immunosuppressants
