Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is performed to:
• Detect arsenic poisoning due to environmental, occupational, or accidental exposure
• Evaluate chronic arsenic exposure which may cause symptoms like skin changes, neuropathy, or respiratory issues
• Monitor the effectiveness of treatment for arsenic toxicity
• Investigate unexplained symptoms potentially linked to heavy metal exposure
Preparation:
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or recent dietary intake that may affect arsenic levels.
• Avoid seafood and certain foods high in organic arsenic (like shellfish) for 48-72 hours before and during urine collection, as they may cause false elevated results.
• Collect all urine produced over a 24-hour period in a special container provided by the lab.
• Follow instructions carefully to avoid missing any urine samples during the collection period.
• Store the urine container in a cool place (often refrigerated) during collection unless otherwise instructed.
