The Anti-Chromatin Antibodies test (also known as Anti-Nucleosome Antibodies test) is a blood test used to detect autoantibodies that target chromatin—a complex of DNA and proteins (including histones) found in the nucleus of cells.
This test is part of a group of autoimmune diagnostic tests and is particularly associated with systemic autoimmune disorders, especially Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The presence of anti-chromatin antibodies indicates an abnormal immune response where the body attacks its own nuclear material.

Description

Why It’s Done:

Doctors may order this test to:
• Diagnose or support a diagnosis of SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus), especially when other antibody tests (like ANA or anti-dsDNA) are inconclusive.
• Differentiate SLE from other autoimmune conditions such as:
o Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
o Drug-induced lupus
o Mixed connective tissue disease
• Monitor disease activity or assess relapse in known SLE patients
Anti-chromatin antibodies are often found in people with active SLE, especially those with kidney involvement (lupus nephritis).

Preparation:

• No special preparation is required for this test.
• No fasting is needed.
• Inform your doctor about:
o Any current medications or supplements you are taking
o Any diagnosed autoimmune conditions
o Family history of autoimmune diseases
