Description
Why It’s Done
This test is commonly used to:
• Help diagnose or monitor acute or chronic pancreatitis
• Evaluate pancreatic function
• Detect pancreatic duct obstruction
• Support the diagnosis of other conditions like pancreatic pseudocysts or infections of the salivary glands (e.g., mumps)
Urine amylase levels often remain elevated longer than serum amylase, making this test useful when blood levels have returned to normal but symptoms persist.
Conditions associated with high urine amylase:
• Acute pancreatitis
• Pancreatic trauma or tumors
• Gallbladder disease
• Gastrointestinal perforation
• Mumps

• Fasting: Not required.
• Hydration: You may be advised to stay well-hydrated before the test.
• Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or recent treatments, as some drugs (e.g., diuretics, aspirin, opiates) can affect the results.

o You will be given a container and instructions.
o Collect all urine over a 24-hour period, starting after the first morning void.
