Why It’s Done
The test is ordered to:
• Ensure therapeutic levels of amikacin are achieved for effective treatment
• Avoid toxic levels that can cause kidney damage (nephrotoxicity) or hearing loss (ototoxicity)
• Adjust dosage in patients with impaired kidney function or unusual drug metabolism
• Monitor levels during prolonged treatment or in critically ill patients
Preparation for the Test
• Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the timing of blood sample collection relative to amikacin dosing.
• Inform the healthcare provider about all medications and supplements being taken.
• No special fasting is usually required unless otherwise advised.
• Ensure proper hydration unless otherwise instructed.
