Why It’s Done
This test is ordered to:
• Diagnose or screen for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
• Investigate causes of unexplained chronic lung diseases like emphysema or COPD, especially in non-smokers or younger patients
• Evaluate liver disease of unknown cause
• Monitor AAT levels in individuals with known deficiency or on AAT replacement therapy
• Assist in genetic counseling and family screening
Preparation for the Test
• Fasting: Usually not required.
• Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking.
• No special preparation is typically needed.
• A blood sample will be collected from a vein.
