Description
Why It’s Done:
The test is crucial for:
• Guiding TB treatment by identifying whether Ethambutol will be effective.
• Detecting drug-resistant TB, particularly in:
o Patients who are not responding to first-line treatment
o Those with a history of prior TB treatment
o Cases of suspected multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB)
• Customizing the anti-TB drug regimen based on the patient’s bacterial sensitivity profile
• Preventing the use of ineffective antibiotics and reducing the risk of resistance development
Ethambutol is a first-line drug in standard TB therapy; knowing resistance status helps in early treatment optimization.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed for the patient.
• A relevant clinical specimen (such as sputum or other fluids/tissue) is required for culture.
• The sample must be:
o Collected in a sterile container
o Transported to the lab promptly
• Inform your healthcare provider of any current TB medications or antibiotic use, as it may influence test outcomes.
