The AFB Antibiotic Sensitivity – Capreomycin test is a laboratory test used to determine whether Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria (the cause of tuberculosis) are sensitive or resistant to the antibiotic Capreomycin.
Capreomycin is a second-line injectable antibiotic used mainly to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). In this test, bacterial cultures obtained from patient specimens containing acid-fast bacilli (AFB) are exposed to Capreomycin to evaluate if the drug effectively inhibits bacterial growth.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

    • To identify whether Capreomycin will be effective against the patient’s TB infection.
    • To detect resistance to Capreomycin in drug-resistant TB cases.
    • To help clinicians design a customized and effective treatment regimen.
    • To avoid ineffective treatments that can lead to prolonged illness or further resistance development.

    Preparation:

    • No special preparation is needed from the patient.
    • The test requires a clinical specimen (such as sputum, pleural fluid, or tissue), collected under sterile conditions and sent quickly to the lab.
    • Inform your healthcare provider if you are on any current TB treatment or antibiotics.
    • Since this test involves bacterial culture, results generally take several week
