Why It’s Done:
• To evaluate androgen-related conditions such as male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia).
• To investigate causes of abnormal hair growth or loss.
• To assess prostate enlargement or prostate cancer risk.
• To diagnose certain hormonal imbalances or disorders of sexual development.
• To monitor treatment of androgen-related conditions.
Preparation:
• Fasting is generally not required for this test.
• Avoid strenuous exercise and stress before the test, as these may influence hormone levels.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking, especially hormone therapies, as they can affect results.
• Blood is usually drawn from a vein in the arm.
