17-Hydroxyprogesterone(17-Ohp)

2,000.00

The 17-Hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) test measures the level of 17-OHP in the blood. This hormone is produced by the adrenal glands and, to a lesser extent, by the ovaries or testes. It plays a role in the production of cortisol and androgens.

Description

Why is it done?

The test is primarily used to help diagnose and monitor congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic disorder that affects adrenal gland function. It may also be used to evaluate adrenal gland function or investigate causes of symptoms like:

  • Excess body hair
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Infertility
  • Ambiguous genitalia in newborns

Preparation

Fasting may be required in some cases. In women, the timing of the test may depend on the menstrual cycle phase.

Results Interpretation

High 17-OHP levels may indicate CAH or an adrenal tumor.
Low levels are usually not concerning but must be evaluated in context with other hormone tests.
