Test Preparation
To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:
1. Pre-Test Guidelines:
• Fasting:
Generally not required, but some facilities may ask you to fast for 4-6 hours if contrast is used.
• Medications:
Inform your doctor about any medications, especially sedatives, antidepressants, or seizure drugs, as they may affect MRS results.
• Allergy & Medical History:
Notify your doctor if you have metal implants (pacemakers, artificial joints, aneurysm clips) as MRS uses a strong magnetic field.
• Claustrophobia:
If you have claustrophobia, discuss mild sedation options with your doctor.
2. On the Day of the Test:
• Clothing & Accessories:
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes without metal parts (zippers, buttons, or wires).
Remove jewelry, hearing aids, glasses, and any metallic objects before the test.
• Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol:
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine for 24 hours before the test, as they may alter brain metabolism.
• Hydration:
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated unless instructed otherwise.
3. During the MRS Scan:
• The test takes 45-90 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
• You will lie still inside the MRI machine while images and spectroscopy data are collected.
• No contrast dye is typically needed, but in some cases, gadolinium may be used.
• The MRI machine produces loud knocking or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
