A CT Head (Contrast) scan is a computed tomography (CT) scan performed using an iodine-based contrast dye injected into a vein. This helps in obtaining clearer images of blood vessels, brain structures, and abnormal tissues.

This scan is used to diagnose:
• Stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic)
• Brain tumors and metastases
• Aneurysms, vascular malformations, and blocked blood vessels
• Meningitis, encephalitis, and brain infections
• Brain swelling, abscesses, or inflammation

Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

  • Fasting:
    • Fasting for 4-6 hours before the scan is recommended.
  • Hydration:
    • Drink plenty of water before and after the test to help flush out the contrast dye.
  • IV Contrast Injection:
    • A contrast dye (iodine-based) will be injected into a vein to enhance brain imaging.
    • Inform your doctor if you have:
Allergies to iodine or contrast dye (may require pre-medication).
Kidney disease or diabetes (contrast can affect kidney function).
Pregnancy or breastfeeding (contrast dye safety should be evaluated).
  • Metal Object Removal:
    • Remove jewelry, hairpins, glasses, dentures, or any metal objects near the head to prevent image distortion.
  • Breathing & Positioning Instructions:
    • You will need to lie still on the CT table.
    • The technician may ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds during imaging.
  • Post-Procedure Care:
    • Drink plenty of water to help your body remove the contrast dye.
    • If you experience allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulty), seek medical help immediately.
    • You can resume normal activities unless advised otherwise by your doctor
