Why It’s Done:
• To detect and localize neuroendocrine tumors such as pheochromocytomas or carcinoid tumors.
• To evaluate dopaminergic function in neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
• To assess tumor recurrence or progression by comparing with prior scans.
• To help in planning treatment strategies based on tumor activity and location.
Preparation:
• Fasting: Typically, fasting for at least 4–6 hours before the scan is recommended.
• Hydration: Drink plenty of water before the procedure to help clear the tracer after the scan.
• Medications: Inform your doctor about all medications, especially those affecting dopamine or neurological function.
• Avoid caffeine and nicotine: Usually, avoiding caffeine and nicotine for 12 hours before the test is advised.
• Physical activity: Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours prior to the test.
• Medical history: Bring previous imaging reports if available for comparison.
• Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes and remove metal objects before the scan.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
