The Urinary Oxalate Test measures the amount of oxalate excreted in the urine, typically over a 24-hour period. Oxalate is a naturally occurring substance found in many foods and also produced by the body. It combines with calcium in the urine to form calcium oxalate crystals, a common component of kidney stones.

Description

Why It’s Done:
This test is used to:
• Evaluate the risk of kidney stone formation
• Monitor patients with a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones
• Diagnose conditions such as primary hyperoxaluria or enteric hyperoxaluria
• Assess oxalate levels in patients with malabsorption disorders (e.g., Crohn’s disease, gastric bypass)

Sample Collection:
• 24-hour urine collection is typically required.
• The sample should be stored properly during the collection period, often with a preservative provided by the lab.
