Purpose of the Test:
• Detect liver damage or liver disease
• Monitor the progression of liver conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or cirrhosis
• Assess the effectiveness of treatments for liver diseases
• Evaluate the impact of certain medications or substances (such as alcohol or toxins) on liver health
• Help diagnose non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis, or cirrhosis
• Monitor liver health in individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes or obesity that can lead to liver problems
What the Test Involves:
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm
• The sample is analyzed to measure the level of ALT in the blood
• Elevated ALT levels may indicate liver damage, but they can also be influenced by other factors, such as muscle injury, medications, or heart problems
• A single test result is often interpreted in conjunction with other liver function tests, such as AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), bilirubin, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) to get a more complete picture of liver health
