The HSV I & II Ab – IgG test is a blood test used to detect IgG antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with the Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).

• IgG antibodies typically appear 2 to 12 weeks after initial exposure and remain in the body for life.
• This test helps confirm whether you have been exposed to HSV in the past, even if you’ve never had noticeable symptoms.
• It can differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections when done with type-specific methods.

Description

Why It’s Done:

The HSV I & II IgG test is used to:
• Determine past exposure to HSV-1 or HSV-2.
• Diagnose asymptomatic infections, especially in people at risk of transmitting herpes to others.
• Evaluate individuals with recurrent symptoms such as cold sores or genital lesions.
• Screen pregnant women to assess the risk of transmitting herpes to the newborn.
• Support diagnosis in cases of neurological symptoms potentially caused by herpes, such as encephalitis.
• Provide information prior to organ transplants, fertility treatments, or new sexual partnerships.

Preparation:

• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• Inform your doctor if you:
o Have had recent symptoms (e.g., sores, itching, burning).
o Are taking antiviral medications.
o Have a history of herpes or known exposure.
