The HLA-B27 Flowcytometry Test is a blood test that detects the presence of the HLA-B27 antigen (a protein found on white blood cells) using flow cytometry, a laboratory technique that identifies and analyzes physical and chemical characteristics of cells.
Unlike PCR testing (which detects genetic material), flow cytometry identifies the HLA-B27 protein directly on the cell surface. This method is faster and widely used in clinical labs for initial screening.

Description

Why It’s Done:

This test is commonly ordered to:
• Aid in the diagnosis of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, especially:
o Ankylosing spondylitis
o Reactive arthritis
o Psoriatic arthritis
o Juvenile idiopathic arthritis
o Anterior uveitis
• Investigate chronic lower back pain, joint stiffness, or unexplained inflammation, especially in young adults.
• Support clinical suspicion of an HLA-B27–associated condition when symptoms are present.
• Identify genetic predisposition in individuals with a family history of HLA-B27–related disorders.
Note: A positive HLA-B27 result does not confirm a diagnosis but supports it in the presence of symptoms.

Preparation:

• No special preparation is needed.
• Fasting is not required.
• Inform your healthcare provider if you:
o Are taking any medications.
o Have symptoms such as joint pain, stiffness, or eye inflammation.
o Have a family history of autoimmune disorders.
