Why It’s Done (Purpose):
1. Rapid HIV Screening:
o Used in clinics, emergency settings, blood donation centers, and remote areas where lab facilities may not be available.
2. Preliminary Testing:
o Ideal for quick risk assessment, including for pregnant women, before surgery, or following occupational exposure.
3. Awareness and Prevention:
o Enables immediate counseling, especially in community outreach and public health settings.
Preparation Guidelines:
• No special preparation required.
• Fasting is not necessary.
• A finger-prick or venous blood sample is typically collected.
• Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any recent HIV exposure (within the past few weeks), as the test might not detect antibodies during the window period (typically 3–8 weeks).
o Any previous HIV tests or preventive medications like PrEP or PEP.
