Categories: ,

This test detects antibodies (IgG and IgM) in the blood that the immune system produces in response to infection with Histoplasma capsulatum, a fungus that causes histoplasmosis.
• IgM antibodies usually indicate recent or active infection.
• IgG antibodies suggest a past infection or ongoing immune response.
The test is typically performed using immunodiffusion (ID) or complement fixation (CF) methods, or enzyme immunoassay (EIA/ELISA).

    Description

    Why It’s Done (Purpose):

    1. Diagnose Histoplasmosis:
o Especially in patients with fever, cough, fatigue, chest pain, or pneumonia-like symptoms in areas where histoplasmosis is endemic (e.g., Ohio and Mississippi River valleys).
    2. Investigate Chronic Fungal Infections:
o For suspected chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis or disseminated disease in immunocompromised individuals (e.g., HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients).
    3. Support Other Diagnostic Methods:
o Often used along with antigen detection, cultures, and imaging studies for a more accurate diagnosis.

    Preparation Guidelines:

    • No special preparation is needed for this blood test.
    • Fasting is not required.
    • Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any current symptoms or recent travel to endemic areas.
o Any history of fungal infections or immune disorders.
    o Use of immunosuppressive medications.
