Why It’s Done:
This test is commonly requested to:
• Confirm the accuracy of a previous diagnosis, especially for complex, rare, or serious conditions (e.g., cancer, autoimmune disease).
• Obtain a specialist’s evaluation, such as a second look by a subspecialty pathologist (e.g., dermatopathologist, hematopathologist).
• Resolve diagnostic uncertainty or discrepancy between clinical findings and pathology report.
• Help guide treatment decisions, especially when therapy is major or invasive (e.g., chemotherapy, surgery).
• Provide reassurance to the patient or meet a requirement for insurance or institutional protocol.
Preparation:
• No physical preparation is needed from the patient.
• However, coordination between medical institutions or pathology labs is essential:
o Request a copy of the original pathology report.
o Arrange for original slides, paraffin blocks, or digital images to be sent to the reviewing pathologist.
o Provide relevant clinical history, imaging studies, and lab results.
