Why It’s Done:
The test is performed to:
1. Diagnose Recent Herpes Infection:
o Detect active or recent infection when symptoms like sores or blisters are present.
2. Differentiate Between Types:
o Identify if the infection is caused by HSV-1 or HSV-2.
3. Assist in Clinical Management:
o Help guide treatment and counseling regarding transmission risks.
4. Evaluate Unexplained Symptoms:
o In cases of unexplained neurological or systemic symptoms possibly linked to herpes.
Preparation:
• Fasting:
o Not required. You can eat and drink normally.
• Timing:
o Testing during the early stage of symptoms is more accurate for IgM detection.
• Medications:
o Inform your healthcare provider if you are on antiviral therapy, as it may affect results.
• Sample Collection:
o A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm
