The HSV I & II IgM test detects IgM antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 in the blood. IgM antibodies are usually the first antibodies produced by the immune system during an initial infection, indicating a recent or active herpes infection.
HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes (cold sores), while HSV-2 is commonly associated with genital herpes. This test helps differentiate between a new infection and past exposure.
