Description
Why It’s Done:
The HSV IgG and IgM test is used to:
• Diagnose a recent or past HSV infection in individuals with or without symptoms.
• Differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections.
• Evaluate unexplained oral or genital sores, blisters, or neurological symptoms.
• Screen asymptomatic individuals who may have been exposed to the virus (e.g., due to a sexual partner with herpes).
• Assess pregnant women for HSV to help prevent neonatal herpes transmission.
Note: A positive IgM may suggest recent infection, but false positives can occur. IgG is more reliable for long-term infection status.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is needed.
• A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any recent infections, vaccinations, or medications that may affect immune responses.
