Why It’s Done:
The HAV IgG test is typically performed to:
• Confirm immunity to Hepatitis A in individuals who have received the Hepatitis A vaccine.
• Detect past Hepatitis A infection, which can help understand if an individual has developed immunity.
• Diagnose chronic or past Hepatitis A infection in people with unexplained liver-related symptoms, especially when accompanied by a history of exposure to contaminated food or water.
• Assess risk for Hepatitis A in individuals planning international travel to areas where the virus is endemic.
Preparation:
Preparation for the HAV Antibody – IgG test is minimal:
1. Fasting:
o Fasting is not required for this test.
2. Medications:
o Inform your doctor of any medications or supplements you are taking, especially if you are undergoing treatment for liver conditions.
3. Hydration:
o Ensure you are well-hydrated before the blood draw to make the process easier.
4. Procedure:
o A blood sample will be drawn from a vein in your arm or, in some cases, from a finger prick.
