The HAV Antibody – IgG test detects the presence of IgG antibodies against the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) in the blood. IgG antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to a past infection or vaccination against Hepatitis A.
• A positive result indicates that the person has either been previously infected with the Hepatitis A virus or has received the Hepatitis A vaccination.
• A negative result means the person has not been exposed to the virus or vaccinated.
This test is often used to determine immunity against Hepatitis A or to confirm past infection.

Description

Why It’s Done:

The HAV IgG test is typically performed to:
• Confirm immunity to Hepatitis A in individuals who have received the Hepatitis A vaccine.
• Detect past Hepatitis A infection, which can help understand if an individual has developed immunity.
• Diagnose chronic or past Hepatitis A infection in people with unexplained liver-related symptoms, especially when accompanied by a history of exposure to contaminated food or water.
• Assess risk for Hepatitis A in individuals planning international travel to areas where the virus is endemic.
