Description
Why It’s Done:
The 5-sample OGTT is commonly used to:
• Diagnose gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), especially when initial screening tests (like a glucose challenge test) are abnormal.
• Evaluate glucose metabolism in individuals with borderline or unexplained blood sugar levels.
• Assess suspected cases of reactive hypoglycemia (a drop in blood sugar after eating).
• Monitor patients with a history of diabetes or insulin resistance.
This test is especially useful when a more detailed glucose curve is needed to understand the patient’s metabolic response.
Preparation:
To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation steps:
1. Fasting Required:
o Fast for 8 to 10 hours before the test (no food or drink except water).
o Do not consume caffeine, smoke, or chew gum during fasting.
2. Diet Prior to Test:
o Eat a balanced diet with adequate carbohydrates (at least 150g/day) for at least 3 days before the test unless advised otherwise.
3. Medications:
o Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you’re taking.
o Some medicines may interfere with glucose metabolism and might need to be paused (under medical supervision).
4. During the Test:
o You must remain in the laboratory or clinic throughout the duration of the test (usually 3 to 4 hours).
o Avoid any physical activity, eating, or drinking (except water) during the test period.
5. Comfort:
