TThe Postprandial Glucose (PPG or PP) Test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood 2 hours after eating a meal. It helps assess how your body processes sugar after food intake and whether your insulin response is normal.
The test is usually done after consuming a normal meal or a glucose-rich drink, depending on your doctor’s instructions.

Description

Why It’s Done

The PP glucose test is used to:
• Screen for diabetes or prediabetes
• Monitor blood sugar control in people already diagnosed with diabetes
• Evaluate the effectiveness of diabetes medications or dietary adjustments
• Detect post-meal hyperglycemia, which can occur even if fasting glucose is normal
It is often performed along with Fasting Blood Glucose (F) and/or HbA1c tests to give a complete picture of blood sugar control.

Preparation

To prepare for a PP glucose test:
• Eat a normal meal (as directed by your doctor)
• Wait exactly 2 hours after finishing the meal before the blood sample is collected
• Avoid any food or drink (except water) during the 2-hour waiting period
• Avoid smoking or strenuous activity during the waiting time, as it can affect results
• Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding medication use before the test
