Description
Why It’s Done
The GCT is performed to:
• Screen for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) – a condition that can develop during pregnancy and affect both mother and baby.
• Assess Glucose Metabolism – especially if you have risk factors such as:
o Family history of diabetes
o Overweight or obesity
o Previous baby with high birth weight
o History of gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy
o Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
This test is usually done between 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy, but may be done earlier if risk factors are present.
Preparation
Minimal preparation is needed for the GCT:
• Fasting is NOT required: You can eat and drink normally before the test unless your doctor advises otherwise.
• Inform Your Doctor: Tell your doctor about any medications you’re taking, as some may affect your blood sugar levels.
• Time Required: Plan to spend at least 1 hour at the lab or clinic after drinking the glucose solution.
• Stay Seated: You’ll likely be asked to stay seated and avoid physical activity during the waiting period after drinking the glucose.
