Description
Why It’s Done
This test may be done if you are experiencing symptoms of bacterial vaginosis or other vaginal infections, such as:
• Unusual vaginal discharge (typically thin, gray or white, with a fishy odor)
• Vaginal itching or irritation
• Burning sensation during urination
• Recurring vaginal infections
The test can help:
• Confirm a diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis
• Differentiate BV from other vaginal infections like yeast infections or trichomoniasis
• Guide appropriate treatment, especially in recurring or persistent infections
• Screen during pregnancy, as untreated BV can lead to pregnancy complications such as preterm labor
Preparation
To ensure accurate results:
• Avoid vaginal douching, creams, or medications for at least 48 hours before the test.
• Avoid sexual intercourse for 24 hours before the test.
• Do not use tampons before the test.
• Schedule the test when you’re not menstruating, as blood can interfere with sample quality.
• Inform your doctor of any recent medications or symptoms.
