The GAD-65 Antibodies Test is a blood test used to detect autoantibodies against an enzyme called glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD-65). This enzyme is found in the pancreas and brain and plays a role in producing the neurotransmitter GABA.
When the immune system mistakenly targets and attacks GAD-65, it may indicate the presence of an autoimmune disorder, particularly Type 1 diabetes mellitus or certain neurological conditions.

    Description

    Why It’s Done

The GAD-65 test may be ordered to:
    • Diagnose Type 1 Diabetes (especially in children, adolescents, or lean adults where the diagnosis is uncertain)
    • Differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
    • Identify Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) – a slow-progressing form of Type 1 diabetes in adults
    • Evaluate Unexplained Neurological Symptoms – such as stiff-person syndrome, cerebellar ataxia, or epilepsy, which may be linked to GAD antibodies
    • Support Autoimmune Screening – in people with a family history of autoimmune diseases

    Preparation

Preparation for the GAD-65 test is simple:
    • No fasting is required
    • No special dietary or medication restrictions, unless advised by your doctor
    • Blood sample: A standard blood draw from a vein in your arm is used for testing
    • Inform your doctor of any autoimmune conditions, medications, or symptoms you are experiencing
